Uniform at Viking
Rationale
A uniform can help to improve behaviour, discipline and develop a sense of belonging and identity, as well as promote equality amongst all pupils. Staff as well as pupils should take pride in their appearance and set a good example for each other.
Viking Primary School believes a smart school uniform is essential in establishing the right ethos and set the right tone in a school. It is our policy that children wear full school uniform when attending school or when participating in school-organised events off the school site (unless stated otherwise). We ask pupils to wear the shirts and t-shirts tucked in and to take pride in their personal appearance. A smart and distinctive uniform contributes to the public image of our school and ensures that our pupils are always easily identifiable. By taking a pride in their appearance, pupils are encouraged to take pride in other aspects of school life, including their work and surroundings.
Aims
Our policy is based on the belief that a school uniform:
- Promotes a sense of pride in the school
- Promotes a feeling of belonging
- Is practical and distinctive
- Identifies the pupils with the school
- Is not distracting in class (as fashion clothing might be)
- Promote equality amongst all pupils
- Reflects the sense both of community and of diversity that the school takes pride in
- Is regarded as suitable and good value for money, by most parents
Education (Guidance about costs of school uniforms) Act 2021
In 2021, the government published guidance about the cost of uniforms. The act aims to make school uniforms more affordance for families, encouraging schools to keep prices down, particularly for branded items. For this reason, here at Viking, we only ask for the following two branded items (however we do accept non branded jumpers/ cardigans):
- Blue school jumper/ cardigan with the Viking logo badge
- Blue Viking book bag (for EYFS and KS1)
All other uniform items can be purchased from the High Street.

Make-up and hair Make-up (including nail varnish) should not be worn to school. Extreme haircuts or styles are not appropriate for school. The use of styling products should be kept to a minimum and children should not have decorative patterns cut into their hair or have their hair coloured or dyed. Long hair should be tied back for health and safety reasons. Hair accessories Hair accessories, such as hair bands, bows, etc can be worn but should be as simple as possible.
