Physical Education
PE at Peatmoor Community Primary School aims to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel both in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health, fitness and well-being. PE at Peatmoor is an imperative element of the curriculum and through the selection of suitably differentiated tasks, children, irrespective of their ability, are motivated to further develop their individual potential. Children compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. We aim to give all children the opportunity to extend their range of physical skills and develop their proficiency as well as appreciating the benefits of participation. Through physical education, we aim to develop interpersonal and problem-solving skills, develop personal quality such as self-esteem, confidence, tolerance and empathy.
Children are taught regularly by both teaching staff and a sports coach from Reception to Year 6. Progressive learning objectives, combined with varied teaching approaches, provide stimulating, enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all pupils. It aims to develop physical competence so that pupils are able to move efficiently, effectively and safely and understand what they are doing. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive situations caters for individual pupil’s needs and abilities. Pupils are encouraged to appreciate the importance of a healthy and fit body and begin to understand those factors that affect health and fitness.
The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area and after school clubs. We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.
